iPhone 2.0 Apps…
July 11th, 2008 · 1 Comment
iPhone 2.0 is here.
Is it worth the upgrade?
Almost all upgrades are worth doing. iPhone 2.0 is no exception, but it is really where the iPhone should have been last year. Glad to see an address book that is editable. Calendar entries, editable too. The big win here is the Application Store. Thursday night, in anticipation, I downloaded loads of apps, but I found myself disappointed in many of them. Here is a list of the ones that are still on the phone (in no particular order):
Limbo: Social networking application that allows you to keep tabs on friends. Find your friends, activities and places to go - food, bars and shops. Once you find where you want to go, you will get a list of friends by distance. If you are not online and your contacts are looking for you? They can send a SMS message from the application to you. Be sure to check out the witty status messages too…. No iPhone? Well, you can use it too…
Remote: Remote control software for your iPhone to control iTunes. I am already looking forward to throwing a party and still being able to control the music without having to run into the other room. Haven’t tried it out on my full home network, but first impressions, it is a basic remote control that gets the job done.
Mobile News: Application version of the AP Mobile News webclip version that I was using before. I lost the view of all my news categories on the Front page, but the application version seems to be performing well. Hoping that a future version will allow me to change the button preferences so I can to my news quickly.
Twittelator: No ads. Twitterific might have been the winner here, but the free version has ads. Twittelator is suiting the bill.
AIM: Its great, if you want to leave it open to keep the chats going… It will remain on the phone until Adium comes out with something. iPhone + chat makes sense, but if I am not getting messages while it is not in the foreground… what’s the point?
Facebook: Webclip version might be a little better. I am not a big Facebook user anymore, but it is nice to check in with folks. Guessing more features will be introduced with the application as it matures.
SmugShot: If you are a SmugMug user, it makes sense. Pictures from the phone to the web, effortlessly.
Yelp: there are times when you need Yelp. Glad to have it on the phone. Location awareness, user reivews and search are a good things to have in your pocket.
Jott: Pretty cool little application that allows voice dictation to notes functionality. Now you can take notes while driving… with your BlueTooth headset of course. OK. Haven’t tried it that way, but typing sucks. Talking and having notes and To Do items written for you, doesn’t.
Google: Hoping that this improves with time. Search only. I look Google apps, wished they did a little more, or I haven’t played with it enough…
Oh yeah, these are all free applications…
